The Institute for National Security Ethics and Leadership (INSEL) was established as a nationally and internationally recognized center of excellence in ethics and leadership in national- and international-security affairs. INSEL resides at the National Defense University (NDU), and its work involves all three functional areas of NDU: education, research, and outreach.
In 2007, General Peter Pace, USMC, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, authorized INSEL. The organization benefits from the wisdom and experience of two distinguished practitioners: General Richard B. Myers, USAF (retired) and Mr. Ike Skelton. General Myers, a former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is NDU's Colin Powell Chair of Leadership, Ethics, and Character. Mr. Ike Skelton, a former U.S. representative for Missouri’s 4th District and former chairman of the U.S. House Armed Services Committee, now serves as a Distinguished Professor of Practice at INSEL and NDU.
INSEL's focus includes enhancing ethics and leadership education in Joint Professional Military Education. A major thrust of its current work is its Project on Military Professionalism—in particular, the ethics of the Profession of Arms. INSEL’s project supports the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Martin E. Dempsey (USA), in one of his four key themes, to “renew our commitment to the Profession of Arms. We're not a profession simply because we say we're a profession. We must continue to learn, to understand, and to promote the knowledge, skills, attributes, and behaviors that define us as a profession.”
INSEL also actively supports ethics and leadership education in other DOD agencies and our interagency partners.
