DRIVING DIRECTIONS

FROM VIRGINIA (the South) and PENTAGON:

Take I-395 North crossing the Potomac at the 14th Street Bridge. Once you are on the bridge get into the second lane from the right lane (not the exit lane). I-395 will curve off to the right using the right 3 lanes while 14th Street continues straight into the city.

STAY ON I-395 until the second exit after the bridge, which is MAINE AVENUE (do not take the first exit which is L'Enfant Plaza). There is a stop sign after exiting. Stay in the left lane and CONTINUE STRAIGHT to the traffic signal, The road in front of you is MAINE AVENUE. TURN LEFT (East) AT THE TRAFFIC SIGNAL ONTO MAINE AVENUE. Be aware that cars may be parked in the far right lane.

Maine Avenue becomes M Street. At the third traffic signal, 4th Street, there is a Safeway grocery store and a METRO Rail Subway Station (Waterfront) to your left. On the right, a small sign indicates the direction to Fort McNair. TURN RIGHT (South) ONTO 4th STREET SW.

Go two blocks south on 4th Street. 4th Street SW ends as your turn left onto P Street SW. Immediately after making this sharp turn you will notice the day-time gate to Fort-McNair on your right. You may use this gate ONLY if your vehicle has US Military registration/windshield decals/stickers. You can park for free on Fort McNair.

If you are driving a rental car or a vehicle without the appropriate decals, you must use the P Street gate into Fort McNair. Pass the first McNair gate and proceed along P Street with the brick wall of Ft. McNair on your right. Just before the stop sign at the end of the block, turn RIGHT into the Ft. McNair entrance. Be prepared to have your vehicle searched thoroughly. Allow 15 minutes for the search.

At P and 2nd Streets, you may turn RIGHT to proceed to the USCG building (multi-story blue building) at 2100 2nd Street SW, Washington, DC 20593-0001

Coming from Virginia (the West) via I-66:

Take Independence Avenue along the Tidal Basin. Follow signs for Maine Avenue. Stay straight on Main Avenue - Waterfront is on the right. Maine Avenue turns into M Street near Arena Stage, which is on the left. Turn right onto 4th Street (Waterfront metro/Waterside Mall/Safeway is on the left). See above paragraph that begins with "Go two blocks south on 4th Street".

Coming from Southern Maryland:

Take I-95/I-495 south toward Virginia. Just before the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, take I-295 toward Washington, DC. Exit at South Capitol Street. Go over the Fredrick Douglas Bridge. Get in the right lane. Make a left at the light onto M Street. (This takes you over South Capital Street). Turn left on 4th Street (Waterfront metro/Waterside Mall/Safeway is on the right). See above paragraph that begins with "Go two blocks south on 4th Street".

Coming from Northwest DC:

From Constitution Avenue, going east toward the Capitol, turn right on 7th street, which brings you to Main Avenue. Turn left on Maine Avenue. See above paragraph that begins "Maine Avenue becomes M Street".
