NDU Research & Publications

NDU operates several research centers which produce expert analysis on security issues.  These research centers fall under the Institute for National Strategic Studies (INSS) which provides strategic support to the Secretary of Defense, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Unified Combatant Commands.  INSS supports the following components:

The majority of the research produced by these centers is available online for the public. NDU Press produces numerous reports, journals, and books for various stakeholders throughout the U.S. Government.

MERLN Public Web Resources

The Military Education Research Library Network (MERLN) is maintained by NDU Library and features a number of resources designed to support the curriculum of professional military education institutions, including:

  • Research guides on frequently-studied topics, such as National Security Strategy, Terrorism, and Homeland Security
  • A searchable full-text database of U.S. National Security strategies
  • Access to military journals published by professional military institutions
  • Digital collections featuring historical documents, reports, and defense white papers from over 80 countries
Currently access to NDU library search databases is only available to international graduates through the MERLN secure-access sites (if you are an international graduate, check here for more information). U.S. graduates of NWC and CISA may sign up for versions of MERLN through the college alumni associations.

Take Classes at NDU

Did you know alumni can return to NDU to continue their education? NDU's Information Resource Management College (iCollege) offers nearly 40 in-residence and online courses in a range of subjects for DoD military and civilians, Federal Agency students, state/local governments, and the private sector.  These courses are FREE to all DoD military and civilians and available via a tiered tuition system to all others.  The courses can be taken individually or as part of a certificate or degree program.  Learn more about iCollege offerings on its website or download the AY 2016-2017 iCollege Catalog for a complete listing of courses.

For international alumni interested in iCollege courses, please check here.

Continuing Library Services

Full access to NDU's library as a graduate is not available.  However, alumni continuing on to agency assignments often still have access to library services. Check your agency intranet for more information.
Military personnel have access to academic collections through their service. These include audio and e-book collections, subscriptions databases, and various journals and publications.
