Biography:
Michael Gold-Biss has been with the Center of Hemispheric Defense Studies since 2005 and is professor of National Security Affairs. At CHDS he has served as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, Division of International Outreach and Research and Chair of the Department of Complex Operations. Prior to coming to CHDS he served as founding Assistant Vice President of the Division of International Programs at Texas A & M international in Laredo Texas, where he was also Adjunct Professor of International Management. From 1992 to 2002 he was Professor of Political Science and Director of the International Relations Program at Saint Cloud State University in Minnesota. He has also taught as Visiting Lecturer in the MSc in National Security and Strategic Studies Program, Department of Management Studies at the University of the West Indies in Mona, Jamaica. He was also Visiting Professor of Political Science at the University of Costa Rica and served as Director of the St. Cloud State University Center for International Studies in San José, Costa Rica. Dr. Gold-Biss has also been a Visiting Associate Professor in the Institute of International Studies and Visiting Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Previously he was a Lecturer on the Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Comparative and Regional Studies, School of International Service and the Department of Government, School of Public Affairs, The American University, Washington, D.C. He received his Ph.D. in International Relations from the School of International Service, The American University, a M.B.A. from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, a M.A. in Political Science from the University of Delaware, and a B.A. in International Affairs and History from Lafayette College. The Escuela Superior de Guerra (Superior War College) of Colombia presented Dr. Michael Gold-Biss with the College's highest honor The Military Medal "Escuela Superior de Guerra." He has received several teaching awards, including the 1999 Excellence in Teaching Award from the Student Representative Assembly (St. Cloud State University) and the 1996 State of Minnesota Teaching Excellence Award for the Minnesota State Universities System from the Minnesota State University Student Association and the Minnesota House of Representatives.
Dr. Gold-Biss has served as a consultant to the U.S. Department of Education, Freedom House, and the Paraguayan Center for the Promotion of Economic Freedom and Social Justice (CEPPRO). He also consulted for the Democracy Projects, administered by the School of International Service at The American University, until September 1991. The Democracy Projects conducted scholarly research on democratic transitions in Latin America and political party development in Central America and also seek to strengthen and expand dialogue between civilian and military officials in the Americas. Dr. Gold-Biss was Associate Director of the Projects in 1990 and Program Associate and Manager from 1988 to 1989. Prior to that, he was the Democracy Projects' principal rapporteur.
Dr. Gold-Biss has lectured at the Foreign Service Institute, the Inter-American Defense College, the U.S. Southern Command, the United States Air Force Special Operations School, the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security, at the Chamber of Deputies of the National Congress, the Institute for Strategic Studies, and the Superior War College of the Republic of Paraguay, and the Center of Strategic Studies for National Stability in Guatemala. He also served as election observer for the 2000 Vice-Presidential elections in Paraguay and the 1990 Presidential elections in Guatemala. He has been interviewed in English and Spanish by major television and radio networks and the print media, including ANSA, Italian News Agency; BBC World Service/Latin America; Canal 6 (La Paz, Bolivia); KPSI (San Diego); El Universal (Mexico City); Radio Continental (Buenos Aires); Telemundo CNN, Cable News Network; TVE, Televisión Española; TVMartí; UNIVISION; Voice of America and WORLDNET, United States Information Agency on current events and U.S. relations with Latin America, and was a regular political analyst for Radio La Plata (Buenos Aires).
Dr. Gold-Biss is a dual citizen of the United States and Colombia, and was born in Bogotá, Colombia.
