Caribbean Program
The Caribbean Program organizes CHDS efforts to promote the exchange of ideas, general education, and international collaborative projects for knowledge and institutional capacity-building regarding national security policy and strategy in a democratic environment and other challenges of shared security in that region of the Americas.
Activities are directed to English-speaking Caribbean countries. In some cases, participants of other non-English speaking countries are invited to join in depending on the core subjects or partnerships established between CHDS and other institutions. The program is especially crafted to conduct most activities using English as the working language. In these cases CHDS provides simultaneous interpretation. Participation in events are either by invitation, self-nomination or self-enrollment. Please, check announcement details for specific requirements/instructions.
Funding for projects and to cover travel, lodging, and other expenses are provided by CHDS or shared with partner institutions. Scholarships or fellowships are available in many cases to both government and non-government individuals.
The program develops itself through courses, conferences, workshops, and exchange of personnel.
» Courses
Courses that are specifically designed and developed for the Caribbean region are the "Caribbean Defense and Security Course (CDSC)" and "Transnational Security, Stability and Democracy (TSSD)". Detailed information is available in the corresponding course tabs and is updated once a course announcement is issued.
» Conferences
Currently CHDS offers two opportunities for the exchange of ideas, crafting of joint projects, and the general sharing of perspectives in defense and security. The "Advanced Policymaking Seminar (APS)" gathers former participants, academics, and government officials to confer during 2-3 days on issues and challenges of current relevance for the region and for the relations of the United States with partner countries. The other modality is the "Senior Executive Dialogue (SED)". This one-week program provides a forum for exchange of perspectives and dialogue among government participants from the region and current officials of the United States Government and opinion-makers in Washington, D.C.
» Workshops
CHDS provides opportunities for analytical development, both of individuals and institutional teams, through the NationLab program. This 3-day educational exercise is proctered in collaboration with institutions of higher education, such as the University of the West Indies, or with joint military-police-civilian courses for government officials. The "CORE" workshop is a 2-day tailored educational activity aiming to improve institutional coordination in the allocation of efforts and resources to secure more effective defense and security policy and strategy.
» Exchange
CHDS welcomes government officials, researchers, university professors and other professionals as visiting scholars. For possibilities and details, contact CHDS.
