Message from the Editor

Dear Colleagues,

As we begin our eighth year of publication of the Strategic and Defense Studies Review (SDSR), the electronic journal of CHDS, a little reflection might be in order.

The purpose of the electronic journal from the start was to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and opinions via an academic journal on-line and available to all interested parties.  While we have maintained the rigor of peer review for article and essay submissions, and have sought to have reasonable academic standards for our product, we believe that we have achieved the initial goal of openness and inclusiveness as well as a degree of intellectual rigor.  We certainly want that to be the case, and encourage the submission of articles, essays, commentary and reviews with that in mind.

The current edition of the SDSR, Summer 2008, reflects this philosophy in the publication of the ejournal.  It contains one article in each of the Center’s three “official” languages.  In addition, it features an essay and a commentary, fulfilling the objective of using a range of writing formats to set forth authors’ thoughts on security and defense issues in the Western Hemisphere.  This issue is eclectic in terms of its topics and themes.  The SDSR also from time to time publishes issues centering on one overarching theme, often arising from a conference or seminar hosted or sponsored by CHDS.

We hope that you have found that the SDSR meets your needs and that you will view the SDSR webpage to enjoy its offerings and to avail yourselves of opportunities for submission of works for consideration.
