A New Civil-Military Pragmatism in Latin America

David Pion-Berlin

David Pion-Berlin is Professor of Political Science at the University of California, Riverside. He is a Latin Americanist widely known for his research and writings on civil-military relations, military regimes, military political thought, political repression and human rights.  Among his publications are Civil-Military Relations in Latin America: New Analytical Perspectives (University of North Carolina Press, 2001); Through Corridors of Power: Institutions and Civil-Military Relations in Argentina (Pennsylvania State University Press, 1997); Democracia y Cuestión Militar (co-authored with Ernesto López, Universidad Nacional de Quilmes 1996); and The Ideology of State Terror: Economic Doctrine and Political Repression in Argentina and Peru (Rienner Publishers, 1989), along with numerous articles and chapters. Currently, his research focuses on two areas.  The first are the political implications of military role expansion. The second are the origins of political change in Latin America, with case studies drawing on countries in the Southern Cone, the Andean and Central American regions.
