CHDS hosts “Security and Defense Education in the Americas” conference in collaboration with the IADC.
Beginning on September 12, 2011, the Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies (CHDS), in collaboration with Inter-American Defense College (IADC), hosted a three-day conference on “Education, Security and Defense in the Americas”. The conference was also the venue during which CHDS unveiled a new research project cataloging the institutions that provide instruction in security and defense issues in the Western Hemisphere. Researchers from across the Americas discussed the curriculum and teaching methods offered by each institution. Additionally, quantitative data was gathered (faculty size, number of students, etc) for compilation in this directory.

Dr. Richard Downie, Director of CHDS, and Admiral Moira Flanders, Director of IADC greet conference participants.
The conference was attended by eighty civilians and military participants from the Western Hemisphere. Panels included most of the twenty researchers from the region, plus representatives of many of the educational institutions that are mentioned in the directory, including several directors of national War Colleges. In addition to Dr. Richard Downie, Director of CHDS, and Admiral Moira Flanders, Director of IADC, the local dignitaries that attended and contributed to the valuable dialogue included, Ambassador Nancy McEldowney, Vice-President of the National Defense University (NDU), and Dr. Frank Mora, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Western Hemisphere Affairs, among others.
