NDU Foundation and CHDS Cosponsor Evening Launch for new El Salvador Book by Dr. Diane Villiers Negroponte
On February 1, Dr. Diane Villiers Negroponte of the Brookings Institution presented her new book titled Seeking peace in El Salvador:“The Struggle to Reconstruct a Nation at the End of The Cold War” at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C. This event, cosponsored by the NDU Foundation and the Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies, was moderated by former U.S. Ambassador Cresencio Arcos, who currently serves as Political Advisor to the Director of CHDS.
Dr. Negroponte’s book examines the resolution of the civil war in El Salvador, and its implications for the waning Cold War between major world powers the United States and the Soviet Union. With a multifaceted analysis that takes into account the decision making processes in Washington and Moscow as well as El Salvador’s internal struggle to end the war. This book also examines the pivotal contributions from the international community: the work of Alvaro de Soto, the establishment of a UN Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and the peacekeeping role played by the UN Observer Mission in El Salvador (ONUSAL).
Dr. Diana Villiers Negroponte is a non-resident senior fellow in Foreign Policy at the Brookings Institution. Dr. Negroponte’s expertise is in Latin American issues, with particular emphasis on security in Mexico and Central America. Previously she served as a senior scholar at the U.S. Institute of Peace. She received her doctorate from Georgetown University with a dissertation examining post–Cold War peace efforts in El Salvador.
