REDES 2002 Organization
THEMATIC
AREAS & PANELS
(PDF
)
1) TRACK CHAIRS: The Track Chair will coordinate
one of broad thematic areas specified in the REDES 2002 Call for Papers. These
are, so far: international security; civil-military relations; defense policy
and policy-making; defense economics, budget, and evaluation; strategic studies;
military sociology; security and defense education; and internal security. (CHDS
will appoint Track Coordinators. Please indicate if you are interested in taking
on this responsibility.) It is possible that two persons share responsibility
for Tracks, especially those with heavy panel and paper participation.
Track Chairs generally will be senior scholars in their field. They will
coordinate the work of Panel Organizers whose panels lie within the thematic
area designated by a specific track. Their responsibility is work closely with
panel organizers to ensure the quality of academic papers and select the best,
organize them into a logical sequence, and maintain a tight schedule for their
presentations.
Track coordinators will correspond with the REDES coordinator in Washington,
D.C. on details of track organization and content. Together with the CHDS REDES
Content Coordinator and Panel Organizers they will ensure that all proposals are
accepted or rejected by April 20, 2002, and completed papers are submitted by
May 15, 2002, and selected or declined by July 15, 2002.
2) PANEL ORGANIZER: Panel Organizers will be responsible for organizing a
single panel or panels on a subject within a specific track. They will receive,
evaluate, and select proposal abstracts and coordinate with the individuals
selected to participate on their panels. Panel Organizers are responsible for
ensuring that papers for their panel are presented in time for publication by
CHDS (not later than July 15, 2002). Panel Organizers will work with their
corresponding Track Chairs to ensure that final papers adhere to the standards
of quality and format required by CHDS for publication on the REDES 2002 CD-ROM
and on the Internet. CHDS will provide formatting instructions in a separate
message. Formatting instructions will be available on the REDES 2002 web-site.
REDES 2002 panels will last two hours. Panel Organizers
will be required to provide 15-minute summaries of the papers submitted by the
members of their panels, monitor 5-minute presentations by each panelist,
moderate debate among the panel and audience (questions, answers, and
commentary), and provide 5 minutes of wrap-up commentary. They may or may not
present own papers during the panel at their own discretion. They must be
prepared to keep discussion moving and ensure time for discussion with the
audience.
3) ACADEMIC PAPER PRESENTER: Presenters of academic papers will be
required to submit their proposals in the form of abstracts not later than April
2, 2002. Abstracts should be one to two pages and describe a problem or issue,
its relevance to research and education in defense and security, the author(s)'
approach to the topic, and conclusions. A cover page should contain the topic
for which the abstract is being submitted, the paper’s title, as well as each
author’s name, organization, complete address, telephone, fax numbers, and
e-mail address. For papers with multiple authors, please identify one point of
contact. The point of contact will be the only person the panel coordinator will
communicate with regarding their paper. It is their responsibility to then relay
the information to the additional authors. Final paper submissions must adhere
to formatting requirements to be considered for inclusion in REDES 2002.
4) *SUBSIDIZED PARTICIPATION: There will be limited financial support for
REDES participants based on the merit of coordinating and organization
responsibilities they assume and/or the quality of original papers presented.
5) AWARDS: Track chairs will recommend papers from their track for
consideration for the REDES 2002 “Best Paper” awards. Best papers will be
read by the committee of Track Chairs, which will vote the “best Papers.”
Best Papers will be announced at the final session of REDES 2002.
