Research and Education in Defense and Security Studies Seminar (REDES)
October 27-30, 2003, Santiago, Chile

The Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies (CHDS) hosts an annual Research and Education in Defense and Security StudiesREDES 2003 in Santiago, Chile.(Click in the picture to enlarge) Seminar (REDES) which engages a broad, interdisciplinary, academic community in both civilian and military education institutions. The seminar serves as a network for exchange of information about methodology and curriculum development between civilian universities and professional military education institutions. REDES ensures communication between civilian academics and professional military education programs, maintains contact with and between CHDS alumni, fosters continuing dialogue on hemispheric security issues of importance and encourages the development of a "community of defense" in the region.

The first seminar was held in September 1997 at Fort Lesley J. McNair, Washington, DC, in conjunction with the inauguration of the Center. The second seminar took place in November 1998 in Williamsburg, Virginia; the third seminar took place in March of 2000 in Miami, Florida; and the fourth seminar was held in Washington, DC in May of 2001. REDES was hosted abroad for the first time in August of 2002 in Brasilia, Brasil, and was co-hosted by Facultades Tancredo Neves, Universidade Federal Fluminense, Universidades Nacional de Brasilia, Universidade Estadual Paulista, Universidade Federal de Rio de Janeiro, and Pontifica Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais. The sixth REDES seminar was held during the week of October 27-30, 2003, in the hotel Hyatt Regency, Santiago, Chile and was co-hosted by the Ministry of Defense of Chile and the National Academy of Political and Strategic Studies of Chile (ANEPE).
