Transforming National Security Seminar Series

About the Series:

This CTNSP seminar series explores cutting edge defense policy issues in an open, unclassified format. Our program is offered without charge in order to provide a venue for education, discussion and networking among professionals influential in the policy-making process. Guests typically include a wide range of experts from the policy, academic, military, interagency, and private contracting communities. As a means of ensuring frank and open debate, all remarks during the conference should be considered strictly "not for attribution."

CTNSP’s series of ten, two-day seminars explore a wide range of forward looking themes. The FY 2008 program marks an evolution and continuation of the FY 2007 National Defense University series on Transforming National Security. Speakers and topics vary from course to course, so prior attendees are highly encouraged to attend. The seminars are held on the campus of the National Defense University, Fort Lesley J. McNair, Washington, D.C.

Next Event!

The Center for Technology and National Security Policy is delighted to announce the NDU seminar entitled, “Structuring the Force: Finding and Funding the Right Mix.”

Our discussions will focus principally on balancing the force structure to address the challenges of high end and low end operations in a resource constrained environment. We expect our morning speakers to make the case for the forces needed to meet each challenge, as well as other force structure options such as a medium weight core force. We will follow these force structure conversations with an examination of the budget realities. A distinguished panel of retired general and flag officers will lead the afternoon session. Among the questions we hope to explore are:

  • What risks can and should the U.S. be willing to accept as it builds and balances the forces?
  • How quickly can the U.S. mobilize?
  • Is a bifurcated force the solution or part of the problem?
  • Does the future force needed to have an agile set of core forces supplemented with specialty units for unique high and low end missions?
  • What are the implications for multinational and interagency operations?

Our event will be held September 18, 2008, in Room 155, Marshall Hall, National Defense University, Fort Lesley J. McNair, Washington D.C.

There is no charge to attend this unclassified conference, and we would like to encourage you to forward our invitation to colleagues. However, please note that in the interests of promoting a frank and open discussion, all remarks should be considered strictly ‘not for attribution.’

To register, please send an email to CTNSP-NCO@ndu.edu with your name, email address, organization, position in your organization and phone number. Directions to Fort McNair can be found on this NDU web page.
