The panel will present models, applications and examples that illustrate the present and future use of

virtual worlds to create a new type of distributed learning ecosystem

Knowledge Management/Analytical Work Spaces Panel

The Future 3-D Face of Knowledge for Work

Jeffrey Morrison, PhD, Scientist, Engineer & Program Manager, US Navy |ppt
Michael Macedonia, PhD, Vice President & General Manager, Forterra Federal Systems |ppt
Robert Dalton, CKMP MF, Army Contractor | ppt

This panel will offer future models of 3-D analytical workspaces and knowledge management that take advantage of virtual worlds.  These spaces depend on access to enormous amounts of information and the need to generate that information in visual metaphors.  The panel will discuss models, advantages and challenges in implementing these workspaces.

The Cloud, the Crowd, & the 3-D Internet - What's Next for Collaboration Online

Michael Nelson, PhD Visiting Professor, Georgetown University | ppt

Michael Nelson Keynote

The Internet is entering an exciting third phase.  In the first phase, the Internet was primarily a communications network for exchanging e-mail.  With the development of the World Wide Web, it became a broadcast medium as well.  Now, with the development of cloud computing, the Internet is become a place--for computing, for collaboration, for simulations.  Data is being stored "in the cloud."  Social networks such as Facebook enable informal communities of interest to form easily and quickly.  Cloud computing is enabling immersive environments, such as Second Life, where users interact with each other--and with music, art, and video--in unexpected new ways.  The cloud will be every bit as transformative as the Web--leading to explosive growth in Internet traffic and new business models.  What are the key technological and cultural barriers that will need to be overcome to realize the full potential of the 3-D Internet?  How can we use it to foster collaborative innovation?  Will it help us find the information we need and the people we want to reach or distract us with a flood of irrelevant

content?  What role will governments play in promoting and regulating new uses of the 3-D Internet?

Augmented Reality Panel

Augmented Reality Panel FCVW 2009

The panel will provide brief summary of the state of the art and practice of augmented reality.  Panelists will cover a spectrum of topics, including military, commercial, entertainment, display and application areas.  The panel will pay particular attention to mobile augmented reality, and the intersection of augmented reality and virtual worlds.

Technical Panel

Accessing Virtual Worlds Cross Agencies: Three Models

Christopher Smith, Acting CIO, USDA | ppt
Eric Hackathorn, NOAA | ppt
Roy Jenkins, Chief Visionary One, e3DMe

Technical Panel FCVW 2009

Accessing virtual worlds across organizations and agencies has been virtually impossible.  The Panel will discuss three models to address access.  USDA is working with the IRM College on a trusted source hosting model.  The second model will discuss open standards.
