US Army Cyber Command Brig. Gen. Jeffrey G. Smith, Jr., Honors NDU iCollege AMP Graduates.
WASHINGTON, DC – On December 15, 2011, 14 members of the 43rd class of the Advanced Management Program (AMP) received AMP graduate certificates from the National Defense University’s iCollege Chancellor, Dr. Robert D. Childs, at MarshallHall on Fort Lesley J. McNair.
Dr. Childs spoke to the graduates, giving the following advice: “Make the tough decisions as leaders. We’re facing difficult challenges right now with budget cuts and the world financial crisis. As you return to your jobs, don’t be surprised if you have re-entry shock due to what you’ve learned and shared with your colleagues the past 14-weeks at the NDU iCollege. Commit to believing that technology and Cyber is an architect of change. Be agile, make the hard decisions, and with it…great opportunities will unfold.”
Dr Childs then introduced the key note speaker, Brigadier General Jeffrey G. Smith, Jr., Deputy Commanding General for Proponency, United States Army Cyber Command, Fort Belvoir, Virginia. General Smith gave praise to the graduates for their educational accomplishments and thanked the families for their support. In his remarks he said, “Cyberspace is an expanding universe. It co-exists with your organizations. It is dangerous and holds great opportunity. As leaders, you must move deliberately...move to occupy Cyberspace. You will co-exist with your enemies and your best friends. Beware of the code -- it is a time bomb. As leaders you will also have the ability and the opportunity to protect and leverage transformation. You’re not only CIO’s, but Chief Pioneer Officers! Do your job right, under the auspices of the government, and you will make a huge contribution to the national defense of our nation.”
Mr. Rich Roach from the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) presented Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Kibble, USAF, with the AMP Distinguished Graduate award. The class plaque was presented to Dr. Childs by Mr. Robert Joynson of Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC). Both AFCEA and CSC are long-time partners of the NDU iCollege. All 14 students were awarded the Chief Information Officer (CIO) certificate and six received the Information Assurance (IA) 4011 certificate. Additionally, six of the graduating students were DoD Information Assurance Scholarship Program (IASP) recipients, including the distinguished graduate.
The “AMP 43” student body represented a cross-section of mid-to senior-level military officers and civilians from the Department of Defense (Army and Army ReserveCommand, Navy, and Air Force), the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Department of State, Defense Information Systems Agency, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and the Department of Transportation. The AMP program includes: strategic leadership and best practices, cyber and cyber leadership, emerging technologies, enterprise architecture, process improvement, performance management, information assurance, IT, and policy. The graduate-level AMP curriculum core and elective courses also provide students with the option of earning certificates in Chief Information Officer (CIO), Cyber Leadership (Cyber-L), Chief Financial Officer (CFO), and Government Strategic Leader (GSL).

About the College - The NDU iCollege, a U.S. Department of Defense educational institution, prepares leaders to direct the information component of national power by leveraging information and information technology for strategic advantage. Although most students come from DoD (military and civilians), the school also accepts federal agency, private sector, and international students into its graduate programs.
