NDU iCollege Cyber Professors: Duvall, Saunders and Hurley, are Honored by the Office of the Secretary of Defense Network and Information Integration Department of Defense Chief Information Office.
Washington, DC. The International Cyber Defense Workshop (ICDW), sponsored by the Office of the Secretary of Defense and Network and Information Integration (OASD NII) Department of Defense (DoD) Chief Information Officer (CIO), acknowledged the team of Professor Gilliam Duvall, Chair, Cyber Integration and Information Operations Department, Dr. John Saunders, Cyber Integration and Information Operations Department, and Dr. John Hurley, Information Strategic Department of the National Defense University (NDU) iCollege, for Exceptional Achievements in Conducting the 11th U.S. DoD International Cyber Workshop from November 6-11, 2011.
Dr. Saunders presented two Distributed Learning (DL) web workshops on Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), on Sunday, December 6, and on Friday, December 11, 2011. The SCADA demonstrations illustrated examples of actual incidents and attacks such as STUXNET and highlighted the vulnerabilities of computer systems and industrial infrastructure (transportation, bridges, electrical, water facilities and more), and how these threats are expanding on a global level.
More than 200 people representing the DoD, international defense ministries, private industry, and academia participated in the web enabled workshops. Over 41 countries, plus NATO and Securing Europe’s Information Society (ENISA) were invited, 23 of these registered and 20 were documented as participating in the workshop from the following countries: United States, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Brazil, Belgium, Slovakia, Sweden, Poland, South Korea, Japan, Romania, Czech Republic, Thailand, Belgium, Chile, Italy, Canada, England, Taiwan, Lithuania, France, Turkey, Australia and the Netherlands. The ICDW broke an attendance record with 226 individuals registered, plus those individuals' team members who participated in the team challenges during the week.
Professor Duvall commented, “This was an excellent chance for building international cooperation and trust in cyberspace and to reach out to our global partners. We look forward to other opportunities for continued collaboration. My sincere thanks go out to Dr. Saunders for his real-world cyber/SCADA demonstrations and to Dr. Hurley for managing the agenda and international coordination for the scheduling of the workshops.”
The International Cyber Defense Workshop (ICDW) helps facilitate international cybersecurity partnering. An education and awareness activity for military cyber security practitioners, the ICDW is hosted by the DOD CIO and held twice annually. The workshop builds technical skills and provides an opportunity for registrants to collaborate with global partners with the common mission to advance the cyber workforce and minimize cyber threats.
About the College - The NDU iCollege, a U.S. Department of Defense educational institution, prepares leaders to direct the information component of national power by leveraging information and information technology for strategic advantage.
