A poster presentation by NDU librarian Brianna Buljung on the use of a technology petting zoo to introduce library patrons to eBooks was voted the favorite by attendees at the 2012 Special Libraries Association Conference in mid-July.
The poster, titled, "iPads, Kindles, and Tablets, Oh My: Using a Technology Petting Zoo to Teach National Defense University Library Users about Downloadable eBooks" was compiled by a team of NDU librarians that included Buljung, Lily McGovern, Dawn Humphrey, Julie Arrighetti, Michael McNulty, Karen Cooper, and Pamela Stroh.
Confronted with a shift from university-provided to student-provided laptops this academic year – the team wanted to help patrons get savvy on how electronic library products function on a variety of devices and platforms. The librarians assembled a group of eight of their own personal devices, and permitted their use in a hands-on "petting zoo" during the NDU Library's open house for faculty and staff during National Library Week, April 8-14, 2012.
"It was a great way to get the tools in the hands of the users … to interact with library products in new and different ways," said Brianna. "I would say probably about 100 people stopped by."
The library will host a second petting zoo aimed at students in September.
