ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Colonel Karl W. Eikenberry is a division chief with the Strategy, Plans and Policy Directorate of the United States Department of the Army Staff in Washington, D.C. He commanded a light infantry battalion in the 10th Mountain Division, and has commanded and held staff positions in airborne, ranger, and mechanized infantry units in the United States, Korea and Europe. He has also served as an assistant Army attache in the American Embassy in the People's Republic of China. Colonel Eikenberry is a graduate of the United States Military Academy, holds a master's degree from Harvard University in East Asian studies, has studied at the British Ministry of Defense Chinese Language School in Hong Kong and at Nanjing University in the PRC, was a national security fellow at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, and is a Ph.D candidate with the Department of Political Science at Stanford University.
