NDU Press
Joint Force Quarterly is published by the National Defense University Press for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (click on the banner below to go directly to Admiral Mullen's website).
JFQ is the Chairman's flagship joint military and security studies journal designed to inform members of the U.S. Armed Forces, allies, and other partners on joint and integrated operations; national security policy and strategy; efforts to combat terrorism; homeland security; and developments in training and joint professional military education to transform America's military and security apparatus to better meet tomorrow's challenges while protecting freedom today.
NDU Press produces JFQ in concert with ongoing research at National Defense University in support of the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The goal of NDU Press is to provide defense and interagency decisionmakers, allies, and the public with engaging, balanced, and thoroughly researched professional publications. In doing so, JFQ effectively fulfills its mandate to advance continuing joint professional military education for the Department of Defense, allies, and other national security partners.
This is the authoritative, official U.S. Department of Defense edition of the JFQ . Any copyrighted portions of this journal may not be reproduced or extracted without permission of the copyright proprietors. Joint Force Quarterly should be acknowledged whenever material is quoted from or based on its content.
The editors of Joint Force Quarterly evaluate submitted manuscripts with the following criteria in mind: CJCS topical
guidance, continuing education for national security professionals, scholarly standards of evidence and argumentation, and readability. The editor defines
continuing national security education broadly to address all issues encompassed in the employment, threat and control of force. Very few submissions are rejected
on the grounds that they lie beyond the journal's purview. Far more frequently, manuscripts fail to pass the "so what?" test. Even if everything in the article
is accurate and criticism is delivered with precision, does the author recommend clear solutions, or arm the reader with actionable education? Be aggressive in
seeking out and identifying problems that should be fixed irrespective of Service perspective, conventional wisdom, or published doctrine. The Chairman of the Joint
Chiefs of Staff encourages professional dialogue and criticism! New ideas save lives, resources and liberty.
Submitted manuscripts must be complete (rather than proposals or sample chapters) and in an electronic format
(preferably as an unformatted Microsoft Word document). Authors are asked to describe the manuscript in a cover
letter and indicate the expected audience. Submissions are evaluated for originality, contribution to a significant
national security issue, and appropriateness for the overall publishing program of NDU Press. Articles for JFQ
should be between 2,500 and 5,500 words. Manuscripts submitted to NDU Press must not be under consideration for publication elsewhere. With the exception of contracted writing commissioned by INSS or NDU Press, no payment or royalty can be made to authors. Submission deadlines fall on the first day of March, June, September, and December of each year. For Authors
