This chapter covers developments in the Greater Middle East from Marrakesh to Bangladesh--North Africa, the Levant, the Persian Gulf, Central Asia, and South Asia. The region is not a cohesive whole; in particular, U.S. policy issues in South Asia often differ from those in the rest of the region. Nevertheless, there are some important common threads from the point of view of U.S. security interests.
