About the Editor


Captain Sam J. Tangredi, USN, is a senior military fellow in the Institute for National Strategic Studies at the National Defense University. His most recent previous assignments were as commanding officer of USS Harpers Ferry (LSD­49) and as Head of the Strategy and Concepts Branch of the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. Author of All Possible Wars? Toward a Consensus View of the Future Security Environment, 2001­2025 (Washington, DC: National Defense University Press, 2000) and numerous articles, reviews, and book chapters on defense and foreign policy issues, Captain Tangredi has won nine literary awards, including the U.S. Naval Institute’s prestigious Arleigh Burke prize. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and distinguished graduate of the Naval Postgraduate School, he earned a Ph.D. in international relations from the University of Southern California and was a Federal executive fellow in the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. He has appeared in The History Channel’s The Great Ships series and in the documentary movie At Sea. He is married to Reverend Deborah L.H. Mariya, a United Methodist minister and former U.S. Navy chaplain.
