Professor Gachechiladze indicated that if trends continue a year from now one could see an increase in Russian influence. The Russians will organize Abkhazia, kicking out North Caucasians but letting in some Georgians and Russians. Georgians will likely be relatively calm and quiet, under the Russian boot. There will be some economic progress. While Professor Gachechiladze hoped that Eduard Shevardnadze would remain in his leadership position, he thought that he might quit. There was some discussion of other political leaders.
Professor Gacechiladze observed that the people of Georgia feel abandoned and betrayed. He argued that the West should quit feeling euphoric and stop saying that it is up to the local people to determine their future. He recommended that the U.S. and European states emphasize with Russia and other states the need to respect the territorial integrity of existing states. This would help Georgia retain its independence.
