CHARLES W. ALSUP

           As a majority staff member on the Senate Armed Services Committee, Mr. Alsup is principally responsible for national military strategy and defense policy issues.  Specific areas of responsibility include keeping committee members informed and preparing legislation for consideration, if appropriate, on the National Military Strategy, Quadrennial Defense Review, Unified Command Plan, Transformation Strategy (Revolution in Military Affairs), and joint military operations developments.  Mr. Alsup also reviews authorizations pertaining to Special Operations Command and Joint Experimentation, and works closely with the Emerging Threats Subcommittee. 

            Before joining the Senate Armed Services Committee in December 1999, Mr. Alsup served 28 years with the U.S. Army as a military intelligence officer, retiring as a Colonel.  He served in Panama, Germany, and Korea, as well as at 14 different posts across the United States, primarily at the tactical and operational levels, including 3/7th Special Forces Group, 8th Infantry Division, 24th Infantry Division, 9th Infantry Division, I Corps, and Eighth U.S. Army.  He commanded at all levels through Brigade.  Mr. Alsup served on the Army Staff and completed his military service as the Assistant J2 on the Joint Staff in the Pentagon. 

            Mr. Alsup is a native of Birmingham, Alabama and currently resides in Virginia.  He received a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry from the University of Alabama in 1968, a Master of Science in Applied Sociology from the University of Missouri in 1971, and a Master of Science in National Strategy and Security Affairs from the Naval War College, Newport, RI in 1993.
