Vice Admiral Fry
Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Vice Admiral Fry graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1971 and was assigned to sea duty. He served tours as division officer, department head, and executive officer in USS McCLOY (DE 1038), USS GRAND RAPIDS (PG 98), USS JULIUS A. FURER (FFG 6), and on the staff of Commander Destroyer Squadron Four.
As a Lieutenant Commander, Commander, and Captain, he commanded USS McCLOY (FF 1038), USS CONOLLY (DD 979) and Destroyer Squadron Thirty-Two. During his sea assignments, Vice Admiral Fry deployed to the North Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Middle East.
Ashore, he served in the Bureau of Naval Personnel, at the United States Naval Academy, in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Manpower and Reserve Affairs, and on the staff of the Commander-in-Chief, Allied Forces Southern Europe. Immediately before selection to Flag rank, he served as the Executive Assistant to the Chief of Naval Operations.
Vice Admiral Fry’s first flag assignment was on the Joint Staff as Deputy Director for Strategy and Policy, J-5. Later he commanded Cruiser/Destroyer Group Eight and the EISENHOWER Battle Group. Prior to assuming his current duties as Director, Joint Staff in July 2000, he served as Director for Operations (J-3), Joint Staff.
Vice Admiral Fry’s personal military decorations include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (five awards), Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), Navy Commendation Medal and various campaign, service and unit awards. He is married, and he and his wife have three daughters.
