ADMIRAL
HAROLD W. GEHMAN, JR., UNITED STATES NAVY
Admiral Gehman served as Commander In Chief, U.S. Joint Forces Command from September 1997 until his retirement September 5, 2000. He attended the NROTC program at Pennsylvania State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering. His first tour of duty was as Main Propulsion Assistant and Damage Control Assistant aboard USS ENGLISH (DD 696) in Mayport, Florida. His next tour was in Vietnam as Officer-in-Charge of the Swift Boat PCF 27 and later as Officer-in-Charge of a detachment of seven Swifts at Chu Lia, Vietnam. Admiral Gehman's sea duty includes Engineer Officer aboard USS JOHN KING (DDG3 ) 1969-1971, followed by Executive Officer of USS MITSCHER (DDG 35) in Destroyer Squadron TWENTY-SIX. Subsequent sea duty assignments included tours as Commanding Officer, USS CONSERVER (ARS 39), Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; Commanding Officer USS DAHLGREN (DDG 43) in Norfolk, Virginia; Surface Operations and Plans Officer with Commander, Cruiser-Destroyer Group TWO in Charleston, South Carolina; Commanding Officer, USS BELKNAP (CG 26), the SIXTH Fleet Flagship in Gaeta, Italy; and Commander, Cruiser-Destroyer Group EIGHT/EISENHOWER Carrier Battle Group from 1993 to 1994, during which he served as Commander, Joint Task Force ONE TWO ZERO during Operation SUPPORT DEMOCRACY. Admiral Gehman served as Assistant for Surface Warfare Captain Assignments at Naval Military Personnel Command; Head, Officer Plans and Management Branch on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations and Executive Assistant to the Vice Chief of Naval Operations from 1989 until 1990. He served as Executive Assistant to Commander in Chief, U.S. Atlantic Command/Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic from 1990 until 1991. Admiral Gehman served as the Director for Operations, U.S. Atlantic Command (USCINCLANT) from 1991 until 1993. He served briefly as Deputy Commander in Chief, U.S. Atlantic Command from 1994 until 1996. In 1996, he reported for duty as the 29th Vice Chief of Naval Operations.
