Major General Robert Magnus 

Major General Robert Magnus reported as Assistant Deputy Commandant (Quadrennial Defense Review), Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps, during July 2000. 

General Magnus was born on Apr. 28, 1947, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was commissioned in June 1969, graduating from the University of Virginia with a B.A. in history. In 1993, he received an M.S. in business administration from Strayer College. His formal military education includes Naval Aviator Training, the U.S. Marine Corps Command and Staff College (1985), and the National War College (1989).

After completing The Basic School at Quantico, VA., in 1969, General Magnus reported to the Naval Air Training Command, where he was designated a Naval Aviator. In 1971, he reported to HMMT-402, MCAS New River, N.C. for CH-46 training. General Magnus then joined HMM-264 as the S-2 officer and deployed on his first Landing Force Sixth Fleet cruise aboard the USS Inchon. In 1973, he transferred to H&MS-15 SAR Detachment, Task Force Delta, Royal Thai AFB, Nam Phong, Thailand, where he was S-3 officer. In 1974, he was assigned as Training Officer, Stations and Operations Engineering Squadron, MCAS, Quantico, VA. General Magnus was released from active duty in October 1974. In December 1975 he returned as Aviation Safety Officer, HMM-263, deploying for his second Sixth Fleet cruise aboard USS Iwo Jima.   He then served as Aviation Safety Officer, MAG-26, followed by duty as Assistant S-3/Weapons and Tactics Instructor, HMM-261 where he made his third Sixth Fleet deployment aboard USS Iwo Jima. He then served as Assistant S-4 Officer and Assistant S-3/Weapons and Tactics Instructor, MAG-26. In 1980, General Magnus reported to Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps, where he served as Aviation Training Devices Officer and Assault Medium Lift Requirements Officer, Aviation Department. In 1985, he reported as S-3 Officer, MAG-29. In 1986, he became Executive Officer then Commanding Officer, HMM-365, and made his fourth Sixth Fleet deployment aboard USS Iwo Jima. In 1989, General Magnus reported to the Joint Staff where he served as Chief, Logistics Readiness Center and as Executive Assistant to the Director, Joint Staff. 

In 1993, General Magnus was assigned to Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps, as Head, Aviation Plans, Programs, Doctrine, Joint Matters, and Budget Branch. He was selected for Brigadier General and in July 1994 reassigned as Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Aviation. In July 1997, he reported as Commander, Marine Corps Air Bases Western Area, MCAS El Toro, CA.  In 1998, he became the Commanding General, MCAS Miramar, CA.  In 1999, he reported as Deputy Commander, Marine Forces Pacific.

His personal decorations include: Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Navy Achievement Medal, and National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star.
