Tim Schmidt—Department of Transportation

Tim Schmidt is the Chief Technology Officer for the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).  In that role, he is responsible for the strategic leadership and technical direction of a modern, secure, high performance Departmental infrastructure supporting the Office of the Secretary and Operating Administration requirements, including all aspects of technology architecture, strategy road-maps, and large-scale systems integration.

Prior to joining DOT Headquarters, Tim was CIO for the Federal Aviation Administration’s Regions and Center Operations organization.  Before joining the FAA, Tim was CEO of SecureChain, Incorporated, a small Washington, D.C. consulting group.  Earlier, while at the Department of Treasury, Internal Revenue Service, Tim was the Director of the Enterprise Systems and Asset Management (ESAM) Division.  Preceding that assignment, and upon his initial entrance into the Senior Executive Service, Tim directed the End-User Computing Support Division.

Before joining the IRS, Mr. Schmidt spent over 21 years within the Department of Defense as a military officer, six of which were with the White House Communications Agency as a Presidential Communications Officer. While in that capacity, Tim commanded the White House Communications Agency’s “Andrews AFB Detachment”.  Of the 69 trips Mr. Schmidt made with the President, the two most notable he oversaw included the Reagan-Gorbachev Summits in both Geneva Switzerland and Reykjavik Iceland.
