ESOL Summer Program

Housing and Living in Washington DC

English for Speakers of Other Language (ESOL) Summer Program

The International Student Management Office (ISMO) offers an English orientation course for the dependents of the incoming International Fellows each summer.  The interactive short course introduces dependents to the American lifestyle and culture through activities conducted in English.  This allows attendees to practice and improve their English while establishing new relationships with other dependents, the instructors and the NDU/ISMO staff. The program is funded through private donations to the NDU Foundation, so ISMO can offer the classes for FREE!

For the summer of 2008, the classes run August 11th-15th and August 18th-19th from 0830-1600 on the NDU campus.

The ESOL program is designed to match dependents with others of their own age group instead of English level in order to promote common interests and comfort.  This further allows dependents to benefit and learn from each other as they work in groups to accomplish tasks.  The four age groups are as follows:

Adult women: age is not mentioned
            Teens:  16-18 year olds
            Young teens: 11-15 year olds
            Children:   6-10 year olds

Note:  Children under the age of 6 cannot attend the program due to
NDU facilities and to the lack of daycare accommodations.

The ESOL instructors for each age group are professionals in the area of teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language; therefore, they are skilled in providing age appropriate activities that are instructional but, at the same time, entertaining.  The instructors work together to make the learning and social environment a memorable experience.

International Fellows will be further briefed on the program during the orientation period,  For more information, please contact Beth Summe, the coordinator for this program in Eisenhower Hall, Room 135 or call 202-685-1702.
