General George W. Casey, Jr., was born in Sendai, Japan, on July 22, 1948, into a military family. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Infantry from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in 1970. His father, Major General George William Casey, was killed in Vietnam that same year while commanding the 1stCavalry Division.
Throughout his career, General Casey served in operational assignments in Germany, Italy, Egypt, Southwest Asia, and the United States. He commanded at every level from platoon to division, including a mechanized infantry battalion at Fort Carson, Colorado, and a mechanized infantry brigade at Fort Hood, Texas. He also served as Assistant Division Commander for Maneuver and Support in the 1st Armored Division in Germany and Bosnia (as part of Operation Joint Endeavor) and commanded the 1st Armored Division in Bad Kreuznach, Germany.
His principal staff assignments included Chief of Staff, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas; Operations Officer and Chief of Staff, V (US/GE) Corps, Heidelberg, Germany; Deputy Director for Politico-Military Affairs, Joint Staff; Commander, Joint Warfighting Center/J7, U.S. Joint Forces Command; Director Strategic Plans and Policy, Joint Staff; Director of the Joint Staff; and 30th Vice Chief of Staff, U.S. Army.
From July 2004 until February 2007, General Casey was the Commander of Multi-National Force–Iraq, a coalition of more than 30 countries, in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He led coalition forces through three transitions of sovereign Iraqi governments while increasing the size and capacity of Iraqi security forces and setting the conditions for long-term success.
From April 10, 2007, until April 11, 2011, General Casey served as the 36th Chief of Staff, U.S. Army. Taking over at a time when the Army was stretched from 6 years of continuous combat, General Casey stabilized and transformed the Army into an agile fighting force prepared for the challenges of the 21st century while meeting the demands of two wars.
General Casey holds a Master of Arts Degree in International Relations from Denver University and served as a Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council of the United States.
