FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
New Name for Historic Senior Service College
(Washington, DC) The National Defense University (NDU) Industrial College of the Armed Forces (ICAF) will be formally redesignated as The Dwight D. Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy (Eisenhower School) during a re-naming ceremony on Thursday, September 6 at 8:45-9:30 a.m. in Baruch Auditorium, Eisenhower Hall, on the Washington, D.C. campus at Fort Lesley J. McNair.
September 6 is the 52nd anniversary of the day President Eisenhower, ICAF’s most distinguished alumnus and faculty member, dedicated the current academic building, Eisenhower Hall. The new name not only honors our 34th President, but it also better aligns the name of the college with its mission of educating the leaders of our nation in the art and science of developing and resourcing United States national security strategy.
The re-naming ceremony will feature the “casing”, or retiring, of the ICAF flag, the unveiling of the new Eisenhower School coat of arms, and the uncasing of the new Eisenhower School flag. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin E. Dempsey, U.S. Army, will speak and preside over the flag-casing ceremony. Members of the Eisenhower family have been invited to attend and participate in the ceremony, along with: the President of National Defense University, Major General Gregg F. Martin, U.S. Army, and the host, Commandant of the Eisenhower School, Major General Joseph D. Brown IV, U.S. Air Force.
The Eisenhower School is the third name of the institution since it was first established in 1924 as the Army Industrial College, a school with the unique challenge of forging closer ties between the country’s military and industrial base. By 1946, the Army Industrial College had expanded to include faculty and officers from other military services, and was appropriately re-named the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, reflecting faculty, students and alumni composed of Army, Navy, and Marine Corps officers, and a continuing trend toward a joint institution. The curriculum of the college closely reflected our changing nation, as it grew from the military-industrial complex at the end of World War II to the current socioeconomic global setting. As the curriculum, faculty, and student body changed, the college once again outgrew its name.
A new designation was selected by considering the joint, interagency, and international character of the professional executive-level student body and faculty, as well as taking into account the accredited Master of Science degree program. With the approval of Congress in the National Defense Authorization Act of 2012, the Industrial College of the Armed Forces was redesignated as the Dwight D. Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy. The new name not only aligns the college with its broad curriculum of national security courses, but encompasses the unique educational opportunity of learning the economics of resourcing United States national security strategy. The Eisenhower School will continue to prepare its students for strategic leadership and success in developing a feasible national security strategy, and then evaluating, marshalling, and managing the resources required in the execution of that strategy.
NOTE: Members of the media are invited to attend the ceremony. Members of the media who

The Economics of National Security Symposium to Follow Renaming Ceremony
Symposium is not open to media.
Immediately following the ceremony, the Eisenhower School students and faculty will participate in an extended academic session, the Economics of National Security Symposium. So that guest lecturers at the university may speak candidly to students, they are offered the assurance that their remarks will be held in strict confidence. Due to this policy, members of the media cannot attend the symposium.
The Economics of National Security Symposium will feature The Honorable Dr. Ashton B. Carter, Deputy Secretary of Defense, as keynote speaker. Following Carter’s address, a
distinguished panel of defense logistics practitioners and policy-makers will challenge the students to consider the dynamic interaction between the health of the U.S. domestic economy, the planned reduction in national security agency and DoD budgets, and the complex international security environment. The panel members will include the Honorable Alan F. Estevez (ICAF, ’95), Assistant Secretary of Defense for Logistics and Materiel Readiness; General Janet C. Wolfenbarger (ICAF, ’94), Commander, Air Force Materiel Command; and Lieutenant General Joseph E. Martz (NWC, ’98), Military Deputy to the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Financial Management and Comptroller. The Honorable Joyce A. Barr (ICAF, ’01), Assistant Secretary of Administration, Department of State, will serve as the moderator. The panel’s discussion of strategic issues will include the increased risk (and mitigation of that risk) that reduced DoD budgets must consider, resourcing tradeoffs within the current national security strategy, and developing a resource-constrained and updated national security strategy for the next decade.
