The National Defense University’s Information Resources Management College, also known as NDU iCollege, welcomed Rear Admiral Janice “Jan” Hamby (USN, retired) as its new chancellor.
Ambassador Wanda Nesbitt, Interim President of NDU, welcomed Hamby, stating that “Jan’s deep experience, strategic view, technical expertise and business acumen will be invaluable assets to both the iCollege and NDU.”
Hamby has more than 30 years of experience in cyber and information technology, and has served as a senior technology strategist at the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD), Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS), and the Commander, Multi-National Force - Iraq. Most recently, she served as OSD Deputy CIO for Command, Control, Communications, Computers (C4), and Information Infrastructure Capabilities. She also has held academic positions as an associate professor of computer science at the United States Military Academy and as a lecturer for the Boston University School of Management.
When asked about coming out of retirement to take on this challenge, Hamby, herself an iCollege graduate, said, “The NDU iCollege truly is my dream job and I am thrilled to be part of this incredible organization.” She also expressed belief in the power of teams and an eagerness to work with faculty and staff to continue building the NDU iCollege’s global reputation, attracting high-quality students, developing the college’s JPME program and keeping the college at the cutting edge. In fact, a recent Pell Center study identified the NDU iCollege is one of the nation’s best cyber and information leadership schools in the nation (http://pellcenter.salvereginablogs.com/files/2013/08/JPME-Cyber-Leaders-Final.pdf).
In addition to graduating from the iCollege, Hamby also graduated from the Naval War College and the Joint Forces Staff College. She holds a Master of Science degree in Information Systems and a Master of Business Administration from Boston University. NDU iCollege is a DoD institution that prepares military and civilian leaders to optimize information technology management and secure information dominance within cyberspace. Although most students are military or DoD civilians, the school also accepts federal agency, private sector, and international students into its graduate programs.
