On May 14, 2014, National Defense University received a delegation headed by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Chief of General Staff General Fang Fenghui and Chinese Ambassador to US Cui Tiankai. NDU President Major General Gregg F. Martin USA and Senior Vice President Ambassador Wanda L. Nesbitt hosted the delegation in an office call where both sides expressed the importance of advancing a relationship of peace and prosperity between the United States and China, with emphasis on educational exchange to deepen military relations and understanding.
The two sides held a ceremonial gift exchange, where Major General Martin and General Fang exchanged books on both Chinese and American history, philosophy and militaries. A roundtable discussion followed, where delegations and subject matter experts addressed issues relevant to both the United States and Chinese military.
The Chinese delegation arrived in Washington Wednesday, May 14. Following the National Defense University visit, General Fang’s counterpart, U.S. Army General Martin E. Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff hosted a reception in General Fang’s honor at National War College’s Roosevelt Hall on the campus of NDU.
