On Thursday, March 22, 2018, Secretary of Defense James Mattis visited the Keystone course at the National Defense University. The Keystone Course is designed to educate Command Senior Enlisted Leaders (CSELs) currently serving in or slated to serve in a general or flag officer level joint headquarters or Service headquarters that could be assigned as a joint task force. CSELs have the opportunity to visit and receive briefings at the National Defense University, the DJS J7 Joint Coalition Warfighting Joint Operation Module (JOM) in Suffolk, VA, and several Combatant Commands and Joint Task Forces.

NDU provides a hedge against uncertainty by developing leaders prepared to handle the Nation’s most difficult national security challenges in an increasingly unpredictable environment. History has shown that the best way to safeguard the Nation’s interests is by educating and developing leaders who are prepared to think critically, strategically, and creatively to produce innovative and holistic solutions.

As the premier institution for strategic leader development, NDU leverages a uniquely valuable combination of academic and research programs focused on national and international security, a diverse student body and faculty, partnerships across the security enterprise, and an advantageous location.
